High risk fire days

Encouraging al livestock owners to enact their fire plans is Agriculture Victoria.

Sharyn Williams, State Agriculture Relief Commander said, ‘’Livestock owners would need to locate evacuation routes, decide which animals to evacuate, have an emergency medical kit and identify emergency accommodation for animals.’’

As part of a fire plan, equipment such as horse rugs and plastic halters should be removed and farmers should fill up all water troughs, as well as putting out enough feed for five days.

Ms Williams added that animals generally tolerate smoke and ash from fires very well, but should not be let onto roads, as they can cause a huge risk to both public safety and themselves, especially in smoky conditions.
