Portland has started its Hampden Football League season strongly but played out an agonising draw against North Warrnambool in the opening round of the Hampden Football League on Saturday.

Leading by 25 points at three-quarter-time the Eagles kicked five goals to the Tigers' one in the last term the final score 13.12 (90) to 14.6 (90).

Defender-come-forward Jake Wilson made an impression with six goals while Harris Jennings was best-on-ground.

Hamilton had a tough day in its season opener against five-time reigning premier Koroit losing the match 52 to 129.

While Darren Ewing kicked 11 goals in Warrnambool's big win against Cobden and South Warrnambool and Camperdown were also victors.

Hamilton Kangaroos opened their 2019 Hampdne Netball League account in the open grade going down to reigning premier Koroit 64 to 52 at Melville Oval.

Roos coach Kelsey Lewis was back to her devastating best with 33 of her team's goals putting in a best-on-court performance.

Portland's season started against North Warrnambool and the Tigers also took some time to get going with a strong finish showing potential for the young group.

The final score for the match was 64 to 40 the Eagles way.

Mel Starr's Cobden team started well defeating Warrnambool 71 to 34 while Camperdown and Port fairy won the other open grade matches.
