The South West being targeted
In the south-west, councils, schools, regulatory authorities and businesses have been targeted by email scams and local police are warning others to not be fooled.
Police are warning local residents not to be email scam victims, or money mules for international crime syndicates.
One case saw a local group lose a staggering $500,000 and rarely has any scammed money been recovered.
Police have said it's clear that email scams and romance sites were working in tandem to target business and individuals.
The emails have been hacked and cloned, with an invoice for payment sent out that appeared legitimate, but BSB and banking account details had usually been altered to a different account.
If you have been a victim of cyber-crime, report it to www.acorn.gov.au or call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
