Victoria Police receives advice on whether to charge Cardinal George Pell over sex abuse allegations

A decision on whether to charge Cardinal George Pell over historic sex abuse allegations now lies with Victoria Police.

It's been more than a year since it emerged that Australia's most senior catholic was under investigation over allegations he sexually abused at least 10 boys between 1978 and 2001 while as a priest in Ballarat and archbishop of Melbourne.

In October, officers travelled to Rome to interview 75-year-old Pell over the allegations.

On Tuesday, the Director of Public Prosecutions handed back the updated brief of evidence to police.

The Herald Sun reports it has cleared the way for police to lay charges.

Cardinal Pell has repeatedly and vehemently denied the allegations, describing them as without foundation and utterly false.
